Hi Oxbow Archaeologists,
I'm just sending a little update on the maker's mark fragment that we found on
Saturday. John O. was looking through his book of maker's marks
and running several possibilities for its identification past me on Sunday. He
made me recall where I'd seen it before -- at the Cater site!!

It is a "Clews" backmark -- see the attached jpeg that shows sherd alongside a
drawing from a book. At Cater we recovered the part that says
"Clew" -- see pages 22-23 and 24 in the Cater book. This company was in
business from about 1818-1834.

[A Clew backmark on a Brown Transfer was also recovered by Art Pomranky at the Ponton site prior to the CNC excavations - see "CLEW" BACKMARK.]
