Hi Oxbow Archaeologists,

Marianne, Dave, Nik, Becky, and I made it out to the Sias East site on Saturday. It was a beautiful day for excavating – not too hot! We started the morning by opening unit 1N-98W and excavating the 0-20 cm level (see Map). This was the upper part of the plow zone and there was not a lot in it, though Dave did find a biface fragment (see Photo 1). We finished the morning excavating the 20-25 cm level of units 0S-98W and 1N-98W recovering several flakes and bone fragments.

In the afternoon, I continued to work on units 0S-98W and 1N-98W, excavating the 25-35 cm levels. The density of material picked up a little at 30-35 cm with several flakes, bone fragments (including some burned and calcined – seems to be mainly deer with a few fish vertebra), and a couple GTP sherds. I did recover a projectile point base (see Photo 2) and a small Middle Woodland rimsherd with a notched lip (see Photo 3) in unit 1N-98W, 30-35 cm.

This week we will be doing lab work at the Resource Building on Wednesday evening. We will probably be working outside processing flotation samples and 1/8” screen bags. Next Saturday we will plan on excavating at Sias East (weather permitting).

Hope to see you at the site.

Scott
