Subject: Riverbank Testing - July 9, 2005
Hi Oxbow Archaeologists,
Marianne, Dave, Kevin, Greg, Nik and I continued to excavate the 60 West test
trench on the riverbank yesterday.
We started by excavating the 2nd A-horizon (65-75 cm below the surface) in unit
60W-South4. We recovered fire cracked rock, a few calcined bone fragments and
flake.
We then opened another unit, 60W-South5, on the south end of the trench
(starting onto the slope of the bank – see Riverbank 7-9-05.jpg). We
excavated it through the 2nd A-horizon (70 cm). Marianne found a brass tinkling
cone from a historic occupation at 20 cm (see 60W-South5, 20 cm.jpg). Nik found
a scraper bit fragment at 50 cm at the bottom of the 1st A-horizon (see
60W-South 5, 50 cm.jpg upper left).
We finished the day taking units 60West, 60W-South, and 60W-South2 deeper.
60W-South is now at 130 cm below the surface. So far they are sterile at this
level.
This Wednesday we’ll start lab work (flotation, washing artifacts, etc.) at the
Resource Building. I should be there about 5:00 P.M. We’ll plan on digging at
the Riverbank again next Saturday.
Hope to see you at the site.
Scott
