Subject: Naugle Site - July 3 & 4, 2007
Hi Oxbow Archaeologists,
We went out to the Naugle site on Tuesday and Wednesday and began excavations!
On Tuesday, Becky and I shot some base lines with the transit and laid out some
units. When I got to CNC Wednesday morning the orientation of the units didn’t
look right in relation to the Resource Building so I checked it with my pocket
transit and found that the compass on the transit is off by about 10 degrees (--
probably the reason it was given to us). Wednesday morning I shot the base lines
again and Becky helped me grid out a 5x10 meter block located between the
Visitor Center and the wigwam (see Naugle 7-4-07 A.jpg and Naugle 7-4-07 B.jpg).
In the afternoon and evening we excavated the plow zone of three units (Naugle
7-4-07 C.jpg shows the first unit). Ron Burk helped me screen a while after he
got done working and Nik came out in the evening. There were plow scars running
north-south at the base of the plow zone. We mainly found fire cracked rock but
there were about a dozen flakes/unit, and a sherd or two. I noted one sherd with
a coil break. Nik found a quartzite utilized flake (see FS-N5 quartzite
flake.jpg) – there were about 25 quartzite tools found in the 1970’s
excavations.
CHANGE OF PLANS FOR SATURDAY – This Saturday we’ll plan on working at the Naugle
site and not Sias East. We’ll excavate at Sias East next Wednesday. For the rest
of the season we’ll try to get the area to be impacted by the Visitor Center
extension excavated. We’ll finish the trench on the east side of the 110 West
Block of Sias East over the next couple of Wednesdays and then focus on Naugle.
If we should get done with Naugle before November (its possible), we might try
to test the Riverpoint and then go back to finish Sias East next year!
At any rate, go to Naugle on Saturday (between the Visitor Center and
wigwam-Resource Building). Hope to see you at the site.
Scott
