Hi Oxbow Archaeologists,
Nik and I made it out to the site on Saturday and continued excavating the 107W
row of the 110 West Block (see Map). In the morning
we excavated the 20-25 cm level of unit 2S-107W and the 0-20 cm level of unit
3S-107W (both plow zone). Nik found a nice hafted endscraper in 3S-107W (see
Photo 1). In the afternoon, I excavated the
20-25 cm level of unit 3S-107W (bottom of the plow zone). In the last bucket of
dirt, I found several fragments of a clay elbow pipe (prehistoric, probably Late
Woodland – see Photo 2). It looks like there is
a feature starting to appear in the southeast corner at 25 cm. I also trowelled
the 25-30 cm level of 2S-107W and found numerous flakes and bone fragments.
On Wednesday we did lab work and had a meeting. CNC is going to have a birthday
party on August 5 and we’ve been asked to participate in the festivities. We’ll
be putting together displays focusing on the “history of archaeology” at CNC.
This Saturday we’ll plan on working at the site. It looks like it should be nice
weather!
Hope to see you at the site.
Scott
