Hi Oxbow Archaeologists,

We made it out to the site on Wednesday (June 4) and yesterday (Saturday, June 7).

On Wednesday, Marianne, Becky, Nik, and I excavated. In the afternoon, I excavated the 55-60 cm level of units 0S-103W, 1N-103W, and 1N-104W (see Map - June 4, 2008). These units produced a couple Bayport flakes (probably intrusive from the Middle Woodland occupation at the 30-40 cm level) and several fire-cracked rock. This level corresponds to the 2nd A-horizon in the 85 West trench (2005 season). This A-horizon is not as distinct in the 110 West Block with only a slightly darker silt and a few fire-cracked rock. In the evening Marianne, Becky, Nik, and I excavated the 35-40 cm level of unit 0S-102W. This level produced numerous flakes and bone fragments as well as a few fire-cracked rocks and sherdlets.

Yesterday, Marianne, Dave, Becky, Nik, and I excavated (see Map - June 7, 2008 and Photo). In the morning, we excavated the 35-40 cm level of 1N-102W and the top of the plow zone (0-20 cm) of 0S-101. In the afternoon I finished the plow zone of unit 0S-101W (20-30 cm) and excavated the plow zone of 1N-101W (0-30 cm). These units are producing flakes, bone fragments, fire-cracked rock and a few sherdlets. I finished the afternoon by excavating the 60-65 cm level of 0S-104W. This level was sterile – no flakes, no fire-cracked rock.

This week we will excavate at Sias East on both Wednesday and Saturday.

Hope to see you at the site.

Scott
