Hi Oxbow Archaeologists,

We made it out to the site Saturday and had a good day excavating.  Dave, Marianne, Nik, and Becky were there and Greg and Lia came up from Detroit!

We worked on the east side of the 110 West Block. I n the morning we excavated the 20-25 cm levels of units 2S-99W, 3S-103W, and 3S-104W.  These levels produced several flakes and bone fragments.

In the afternoon Greg, Lia, and I excavated the 20-25 cm level of 3S-102W and the 25-30 cm level of units 3S-103W and 3S-104W.  In addition to flakes, bone fragments and fire-cracked rock, 2S-102W produced a small crosshatch incised bodysherd (see Photo 1).  Initially we thought it might be a rimsherd.  However, after washing, it turned out to be a bodysherd with a coil-break at the top.  It is probably from the same vessel as the Reuben Linear(-like) rimsherd with cordmarking that we recovered last year (see Middle Woodland Rimsherd, 2S-104W).  The flake and bone fragment density picked up in the 25-30 cm level of units 3S-103W and 3S-104W.  In addition to flakes and bone fragments, 3S-103W produced an endscraper (see Photo 2) and biface fragment (see Photo 3) and 3S-104W produced a biface tip (see Photo 4).

This week we will plan on meeting at the Resource Building Wednesday evening.  However, I may have to change this -- Dan got had a call about a mastodon today.  Dan and I will probably try to check it out tomorrow, but if it rains tomorrow that will probably have to be Wednesday.  If it looks like I can't make it Wednesday, I'll send another email tomorrow -- otherwise we will meet Wednesday evening.  Next Saturday we will excavate at Sias East.

Hope to see you at the site.

Scott
