Hi Oxbow Archaeologists,
Nik, Kevin, Becky, Dave, Marianne, and I made it out to the site yesterday and
had a good day excavating (see Map).
In the morning we excavated the bottom of the plow zone (25-30 cm) and the 35-40
cm level of units 0S-102W and 1N-102W. Both levels produced flakes, bone
fragments, grit-tempered pottery, and fire-cracked rock. Marianne found a
side-notched projectile point in the 25-30 cm level of 1N-102W (see
Photo). This point goes with the
Middle Woodland occupation.
In the afternoon, I excavated the 50-55 cm level of units 0N-103W, 0N-104W,
1N-103W, and 1N-104W. This level produced a few flakes, bone fragments and
fire-cracked rock (much lower densities). Unit 1N-103W had a 10 fire-cracked
rocks in a relatively small area with a trace of fire-reddened silt. I finished
the day excavating the 55-60 cm level of unit 0N-104W. This level only produced
two flakes.
This Wednesday we will try to excavate at the site. I should be at the site by 5
P.M., but could be there earlier. I’ll send an email Tuesday if I have a better
idea of when I’ll arrive. Next Saturday we will also plan on excavating.
Hope to see you at the site.
Scott
