Hi Oxbow Archaeologists,

We will not be meeting this Wednesday, March 10. I will be speaking to the River Raisin Chapter in Monroe and most everyone else has other commitments that evening.

Also, the program for March 31 has changed. Meghan Howey had a conflict come up with that date in her schedule and won’t be able to give the talk. Instead, Conrad and I will do the program that evening. I’ll talk about our recent C-14 date and its relation to other Late Woodland sites in central Michigan and Conrad will present some of the results of his research into the artillery button we found this summer (he’s identified the original owner of the button!).

Yesterday, Saturday March 6, there was an ice jam on the rivers with a lot of flooding at CNC. Conrad and I went over to the Ponton site to see how high the water got in relation to the excavations and we took some pictures. The water did not go over the site (see Ponton Site #1-3 in the photo gallery below), though the terrace below the site was flooded. The Cater site and 20MD534 were completely covered by the flood water (see Cater Site and 20MD534 in the photo gallery below).

Next Saturday, March 13, we will meet as usual and will continue with lab work for the next couple months on our regular schedule. Hope to see you at the lab.

Scott
