Sorry about the delay in this weeks update – I’ve been having some trouble with the illustrations. Marianne, Kevin, Conrad, and I made it out to the site on Saturday and continued excavating the 110 West units. We finished excavating the 25-30 cm level and recovered pottery, lots of flakes, and bone fragments (deer, turtle shell, etc.). At 30 cm there are three features. Feature 2 was identified last week and is a dark grayish-brown stain (see the illustration below). I took a core from it on Saturday and the feature fill extended the entire 35-40 cm length of our coring tool, so this feature is at least 40 cm deep. Feature 3 is a very pale brown stain containing some gravel. A core indicated that it is 5-10 cm deep. Feature 4 is located in the southeast corner of the excavation and is a dark gray stain. A core indicated that this feature is about 15 cm deep. At the end of the day, Conrad and I opened a new unit (2S-108W) to extend the excavation to the east. We excavated this unit to 10 cm and found a few flakes at 10 cm (otherwise sterile in the top levels).

Tomorrow (Wednesday), we’ll meet at the Resource Building. Among the things we need to do is get the fall workshop fliers ready to mail. I’ll be working on this in the afternoon, but there may be some more work on them that will need to be done in the evening. We’ll also wash 1/8” screen bags.

Saturday we’ll plan on excavating at 20MD263.
